If you ever wanted to try a “Spend $50, get 10% off” promotion in WooCommerce using a coupon, you’d realize the default settings don’t allow it.
You’ll need additional plugins or custom code to make that happen.
Default WooCommerce coupons are static. They lack the “If/Then” rules required to reward specific shopper behaviors, like first-time buys or category-specific spending.
This can impact conversion because customers shouldn’t have to hunt for discount codes. If anything, they should find them.
We’re excited to launch Power Coupons, a free WordPress coupon plugin that changes that.
In this guide, we’ll show you how to use Power Coupons to:
- Eliminate checkout friction using auto-apply triggers.
- Build advanced cart conditions to increase your average order value.
- Protect your margins by setting surgical product exclusions.
- Configure your first automated promotion in under two minutes.
Where Does WooCommerce Fall Short With Coupons?
WooCommerce ships with a basic coupon system that works for straightforward discounts. If you want to give a fixed discount or free shipping via a manual code, it works.
But as we built CartFlows and worked with 300,000+ WooCommerce stores, we kept hearing about the same problems when creating promotions.
- Friction: Customers had to manually find coupons and apply it at checkout. If a shopper qualifies for a deal based on their cart contents, the discount couldn’t be shown or applied automatically.
- Lack of “If/Then” rules: You cannot easily build rules like “If the cart total exceeds $75 and the category is Summer Collection, then apply 15% off.”
- Static responses: Discounts should update as shoppers add more items to fulfill a coupon’s minimum requirement. In native WooCommerce, if a cart changes and no longer qualifies, the coupon often stays applied or requires a manual refresh, which can confuse customers.
Store owners usually solve this by installing three separate plugins: one for auto-apply, one for cart conditions and another for exclusion rules.
Power Coupons can replace all three.
What Makes Power Coupons Different
We focused on building something genuinely useful rather than just another discount tool.
Every promotion follows a simple flow: “Give X to Y when Z happens.”
- Auto-apply by default: We designed the plugin assuming discounts should trigger automatically when conditions match. You can still use manual codes, but the goal is to remove the “coupon code” field from checkout whenever possible.
- Performance first: We built it to use native WooCommerce tables. It doesn’t add heavy JavaScript to your frontend or slow down page load times.
- A unified interface: Cart conditions, product rules, quantity triggers and exclusions are all managed in one place.
We’re launching a completely free version of Power Coupons today.
There’s also a Pro version for stores that need complex logic or more involved user-role targeting, but the free version handles the core needs of 90% of stores.

What Power Coupons Adds (For Free)
Here’s what we’re releasing in the free version of Power Coupons. Each feature solves a specific problem for store owners.
1. Auto-Apply Logic
Asking customers to enter codes at checkout can interrupt the flow. If they don’t have a coupon to hand, they often leave to search on Google and never come back.
How It Works: You toggle any coupon to “auto-apply” mode. Set your conditions and the discount triggers the moment the cart meets the criteria.

2. Deeper Cart Conditions and Rules
Cart conditions are the rules that govern your promotion. This allows you to target specific shopping behaviors such as minimum or maximum order values, specific product quantities, or category requirements.
For instance, if you want to clear out your “Winter” category you can set a rule:
“If Product Category = Winter AND Number of Cart Items ≥ 2, then apply a 20% discount.” Power Coupons evaluates this in real-time as the user shops.

3. Show the Right Offers at the Right Time
Customers shouldn’t have to guess whether a deal exists. If you’re running multiple promotions, they need a way to see what’s available without hunting through your marketing emails or typing random codes at checkout.
How It Works: Power Coupons adds a “View Available Coupons” button directly on your checkout page. When clicked, a slideout panel displays all active offers the customer qualifies for, complete with discount amounts, codes (if needed), and expiry dates.
This gives customers visibility into your promotions without interrupting their checkout flow. They can see exactly what deals apply to their cart, choose the best option, and continue to payment. No tab-switching, no guessing, no friction.

How To Set Up Your First Promotion With Power Coupons for WooCommerce
Let’s create a real promotion together: “Spend $50+, get 10% off automatically”
This is one of the most common scenarios we see. It incentivizes higher cart values without requiring customers to remember codes.
Here’s how to set it up.
Step 1: Create Your Coupon
Go to Power Coupons → Add coupon in your WordPress dashboard.

Set the basic details:
- Coupon Name: Internal reference (e.g., “AOV Booster $50”)
- Discount Type: Percentage discount
- Amount: 10

Step 2: Enable Auto-Apply
Scroll down to the Settings section and toggle Auto-Apply This Coupon to the ON position. This ensures the customer doesn’t have to remember a code.

Step 3: Add Cart Condition
Switch to the Rules tab and enable conditional rules.

Click Add Condition and select Cart Total, set operator to Greater than or equal to and enter 50.

This tells Power Coupons: “Only apply a 10% discount when the cart reaches $50 or more.”
Step 4: Configure Where The Coupon is Displayed
Go to Power Coupons > Settings from the WordPress sidebar.
This takes you to the main settings panel where you can configure exactly where and when coupons appear and how they work.

Free vs. Pro: What Do You Actually Need?
